There are some voices you don’t simply hear, you feel them.
Mehfil is a tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and the unmistakable atmosphere his music creates. The harmonium, the tabla, the clapping, the rising voices, and then that voice at the center of it all, powerful enough to fill a room and somehow make everything else disappear.
For so many of us in the South Asian diaspora, his music feels almost inherited. You know the songs before you remember learning them. They have played in our homes, at our gatherings, on long drives, at celebrations, and in the background of countless memories. His music crosses generations; somehow, everyone knows Nusrat.
This painting is my attempt to capture that feeling, the warmth of a mehfil, the musicians gathered together, the glow of the stage, and that moment when the music builds and you can almost feel the room change.
A celebration of sound, culture, nostalgia, and a voice that became part of our collective memory.
